I’m Rachel, Tech Lead at Futureheads and I’ve put together a salary guide for technical change management roles, to give candidates and clients a snapshot of pay rate across business analysis, project management and programme management.

Business Analysis

Contract:

Junior: £150 – £250/day
Mid-weight: £250 – £400/day
Senior/Lead: £400 – £550/day
Head of: £550 – £700/day

Mid-weight: £35,000 – £55,000
Senior/Lead: £45,000 – £75,000
Head of: £75,000 – £100,000

Range of pay varies significantly from sector to sector

The business analysis function is often seen as a communication bridge between stakeholders and IT and plays a key part in the change management process. The range of pay varies significantly from sector to sector, so there is a broad range for each level of experience.

Of course, there are exceptions for every level depending on niche backgrounds, experience and skillsets. According to IT Jobs Watch, the average salary for Change Managers in 2016 is around £55,000 in the UK, going up by 4.76% year on year.

Business Analysts are commonly hired as contractors

As with most roles in change management and transformation, Business Analysts are commonly hired as contractors, although medium to large businesses typically have a small in-house team also.

Project Management

Contract:

Junior: £150 – £250 per/day
Mid-weight: £250 – £400/day
Senior: £350 – £500/day
Lead: £450 – £600/day
Head of: £500 – £800/day

Permanent:

Junior: £25,000 – £35,000
Mid-weight: £30,000 – £50,000
Senior: £45,000 – £65,000
Lead: £65,000 – £85,000
Head of/Director Level: £75,000 – £100,000+

Project management is a skillset where many people work exclusively as contractors

Project management, similar to business analysis, is a skillset where many people work exclusively as contractors. Most start out as permanent members of staff to gain a few years of practical experience, training and expertise to command a strong day rate. However, many people remain permanent for their entire careers or are open to both types of role. You can view average salary for project management skill/speciality here.

Highly regulated industries such as financial services and insurance tend to pay a premium for change management teams, whereas digital and marketing agencies, government and some media clients tend to pay slightly less than the industry average. Consulting companies can go either way depending on their business model.

Programme Management

Contract:

Mid-weight: £450 – £550/day
Senior: £525 – £650/day
Lead/Head of: £650 – £750/day
Director: £700 – £900/day

Permanent:

Mid-weight: £55,000 – £65,000
Senior: £65,000 – £80,000
Lead/Head of: £80,000 – £110,000
Director: £90,000 – £130,000

Again, salaries, day rates, packages and job titles can vary greatly and are often dictated by individual companies’ internal grading systems.  There are many methodologies and qualifications Business Analysts, Project and Programme Managers may utilise, which can impact the way they work and also their pay rate. However, in many cases, it is not necessary to have formal qualifications if practical experience is strong.
