<h2>What&rsquo;s the story of your career so far?</h2>
<p>When I started my degree in Psychology, I knew I had a definite interest in human behaviour and the mind. I then went onto complete a Master&rsquo;s degree in Occupational Psychology as I&rsquo;d chosen to focus on this area of psychology.</p>
<p>I had eliminated Forensic Psychology after doing a temporary role with the CPS and reading some of the horrific case files!</p>
<p>My first learning role was in the public sector managing training for Judges and Magistrates, which was the start of a 15 year career path in Learning and Development.</p>
<p>Along the way, I started to develop my coaching skills and was always keen to take it a step further which resulted in me completing a qualification in order to establish myself as a coach. I am in my element when I am coaching individuals and seeing those moments of enlightenment leading to growth!</p>
<h2>What do you love most about what you do?</h2>
<p>I enjoy the variety of what I do across the learning and development arena, from psychometrics, designing webinars to delivering development centres. I love being able to work with individuals using an authentic approach, and supporting them along a journey of self-discovery and growth. When I see a client experience those light bulb moments, that&rsquo;s when I really get my energy and where my passion lies &ndash; to create that level of self-awareness.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s the most important lesson you learned in 2020 amidst all the Covid-19 disruption?</h2>
<p>That it is ok, to not to be ok &ndash; a lot more openly. The pandemic has opened up the conversations where you can be vulnerable and show your human side, and that also extends to joining a Zoom meeting in your hoodie!</p>
<p>Thriving and surviving can co-exist, you may not realise it but there is always an element of growth when you are facing a new or difficult challenge, and this has been one hell of a big test for many! Resilience comes in all shapes and sizes, you just may not realise your own level of resilience.</p>
<h2>As far as you can predict, what&rsquo;s on the cards this year for you and your business?</h2>
<p>I am looking forward to growing my new coaching business as I am at the start of an exciting new journey! I am keen to continue to raise awareness around wellbeing and sharing my own personal journey to inspire others.</p>
<p>Mental health is a topic close to my heart, being able to support others who face challenges and are on their own journey is important to me. There is also a book idea hanging around in my brain which I need to get down on paper sometime soon!</p>
<h2>If you could go back and do it all over again, would you choose a different career path and why?</h2>
<p>I think I would still want a role where I was supporting others in some way, but it would be as a police detective! I am very much intrigued by understanding the human mind, I love problem solving and all the crime programmes, part of me thinks I should have taken the Forensic Psychology path!</p>

<p>Anthony is a thought leader in technical leadership and organisational processes. He is a regular organiser &amp; presenter at conferences and meetups, a tech blogger, and is active in the open source community &ndash; In particular the Umbraco CMS, where he is an Umbraco MVP &amp; Master. Anthony has experience in building high performing remote distributed production teams spanning multiple countries. He is an Agile/Scrum/Kanban enthusiast, a vocal proponent of Behaviour/Test Driven Development, and is always looking for ways to make development more efficient and enjoyable. Originally from Sydney, Australia, he is now based in London.</p>

<p>What&rsquo;s the story of your career so far? Any particular highlights?</p>
<p>I personally hate the word &lsquo;career&rsquo;. I&rsquo;ve never had a career, and I don&rsquo;t want one. I do what interests me, and luckily I have a skill set which means I can earn a good wage. This is something which I am very grateful for. That said, here is my story so far&hellip;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I am originally from Sydney, Australia. I was hired for my first &lsquo;real&rsquo; job way back in 2007 following a meeting with a friend at a local pub at 2am! This was where I was first exposed to the Umbraco community &ndash; a community with which I have been heavily involved ever since.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As a junior in my first company, I was basically working 60 hour weeks for much of the time. It was a trial by endurance, but by 2010 I had almost a similar type of experience as some senior developers. In fact, when I moved to London in 2010, people hired me as a senior developer. Whilst contracting, I had met the owners of The Cogworks at the Umbraco London meetup. They were a famous Umbraco development house turned digital consultancy. Little did I know that this encounter would dictate almost 7.5 years of my life. The Cogworks was one of those companies that basically lets you do whatever you want, as long as you&rsquo;re delivering the goods. It gave me a chance to blaze my own path, learn what I wanted, and be involved in organising conferences such as The Umbraco UK festival and The Umbraco Poland Festival. I even got the chance to open an office in Krakow, which is a city I really adore. It was truly a special place to work, and I have to admit that at the time I took it for granted.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>By 2019 it was time for new challenges. I was originally planning to go contracting again, until I stumbled across the Technical Director role at Radley Yeldar (a 200-person full service agency). This was an opportunity to transform an entire department, and bring the rest of the company along for the ride. I came in like a wrecking ball, tearing down old processes, questioning beliefs, creating new policies, restructuring their infrastructure and billing practices, introducing Scrum and Kanban, forming teams, and generally having a ball. I built the development team from 5 people up to 17 within a matter of weeks. In March 2020, the &ldquo;bug&rdquo; hit, and it was time to leave, albeit prematurely. As of now, I am working as Head of Development for ISS LiquidMetrix &ndash; a fintech company in London.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What&rsquo;s the most important lesson you&rsquo;ve learned over the course of your career?</p>
<p>Soft skills matter more than technical prowess. We have all heard of that &ldquo;difficult&rdquo; person who we put up with because that person is brilliant. Here is a news flash: most of us are not that brilliant person, so learn to get along with people. Be helpful, be friendly, give praise, and don&rsquo;t take things personally.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What skills are going to be most useful for candidates in your industry over the coming months?</p>
<p>I&rsquo;m not sure about the coming months. These are very unpredictable times. However, I will tell you things I look for in CVs. If you can show experience in Test Driven Development/Behaviour Driven Development then you go to the top of my list. Add to this SOLID Principles, Hexagonal Architecture, Devops, a pragmatic sensible approach, a load of side projects, and really good people skills. If you tick these boxes, then in my opinion, you are the type of person who will succeed.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What advice would you give to others in a similar position to you at the moment?</p>
<p>At the time of writing this, we&rsquo;ve all been working remotely since March. For everyone in leadership positions, please check in with your staff as often as possible. People working from home can feel isolated, and it is hard to notice mental health issues when people are remote. Try to be the person that they can trust and believe in. Show your team that you care about their wellbeing with your actions. Be open minded, be flexible. Most importantly, talk to your staff with your webcam turned on so they can see your face.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What&rsquo;s going to be the biggest challenge in your industry in 2021?</p>
<p>A few things come to mind. Scaling up to meet demand in big data storage and processing, keeping up with technology, staying efficient when there are so many startups trying to get a piece of the pie, and even staff retention (developers get bored easily). The elephant in the room though is Brexit. What cross border regulations will exist, and what time frame to do have to implement them? It is a big unknown!</p>

Futureheads Five Stories – Anthony Dang

<p>Dave Lush is CTO at MindGym. He kindly took 5 minutes to share with us his career journey so far and the biggest lessons he&rsquo;s learnt along the way.</p>

<p>What&rsquo;s the story of your career so far?</p>
<p>My first technical role was with a 10 person company in Reading. The guidance given to me and another graduate was &ldquo;make this work in the web&rdquo;. From there we had to teach ourselves above source control, continuous integration, multi-tier architectures, bug tracking, hosting&hellip; Everything&hellip; It was brilliant! I haven&rsquo;t looked back since then. I moved on to spend 9 years with Visa focusing primarily on mobile and online payments, before moving to ONZO (a data analytics start up) and most recently Mind Gym.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I&rsquo;ve walked what is probably a typical path. I tend to speak up and help keep teams organised / focused. This has naturally landed me in team-lead followed by management positions. I&rsquo;ve needed to keep learning new skill sets that are not purely technical. I then found myself getting further away from the technology than I wanted and focussed in on small to medium size technology teams.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What do you love most about what you do?</p>
<p>I&rsquo;ve considered going back to being an individual contributor multiple times. If ever did I would not be able to live without the diversity of my current role</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I love shifting between detailed technical, process, motivation, leadership, commercial and compliance issues (to name just a few). I really enjoy the constant flow of learning new specialisms in order to help guide us to the right decisions for the business.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What&rsquo;s the most important lesson you learned in 2020 amidst all the Covid-19 disruption?</p>
<p>I&rsquo;ve been working and managing remotely on and off for the past four years. I used to think that it was quite easy. What I now realise is that it is hard to maintain the strong social bond in your team when the option to meet face-to-face is taken away. We&rsquo;ve had to put in place &ldquo;scheduled fun&rdquo; to stop people from working a little during the day and just get online to play a game of https://skribbl.io/ or grab a coffee together. It&rsquo;s too easy to not make the time.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I realise this is two lessons, but I&rsquo;ve also learnt how lucky I am to have a comfortable home situation with fairly open spaces nearby</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As far as you can predict, what&rsquo;s on the cards this year for you and your business?</p>
<p>Exciting times! Over the past year we&rsquo;ve built up a seed of an engineering team with a combination of talent and experience. They have gelled as a group and are moving ever quicker with their software deliveries. In the coming year we plan on adding to this team with a diverse mixture of experience levels and backgrounds to push us on even further.</p>

<p>If you could go back and do it all over again, would you choose a different career path and why?</p>
<p>100% I would not change career path. I&rsquo;ve loved the challenges I&rsquo;ve encountered, the things we&rsquo;ve been able to create and the people I&rsquo;ve had the opportunity to work with. If I could do one thing differently it would have been to move on from financial services a little earlier. Part of the joy of technology is that you get to move between different industries and there is a lot out there to explore.</p>

<p>Hopefully I have a long career ahead of me yet, with plenty of time to learn about new industries!</p>

Futureheads Five Stories – Dave Lush

<p>Guillaume Buat-Menard is a director at Flipside, a London based digital product agency part of Weber Shandwick.</p>
<p>Flipside develops high end digital products, technical innovation and digital transformation for clients as diverse as Coca Cola, Novartis, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Scope and Public Health England.</p>

<p>Flipside acquired Aqueduct in January 2020, where Guillaume developed a practical digital transformation offering for organisations in need of support during their own transformation. He currently leads the digital transformation practice at Flipside.</p>
<p>Guillaume is an agile and beyond budgeting enthusiast and believes in learning by doing, which, underpins Flipside&rsquo;s approach to digital transformation.</p>
<h2>1. In what shape has your business emerged from Covid-19?</h2>
<p>Really well actually. In terms of logistics and IT we already had a remote working culture, so it was not difficult to adapt to the lockdown. We had to adapt somewhat, rationalise and reduce regular meetings, and ensure everybody has a decent home working set-up.</p>
<p>In terms of business we are lucky enough that we have a broad client base across many verticals, so whilst some clients have slowed or paused projects, some have continued as usual and some have increased spend due to COVID.</p>
<p>This means that financially we are in a good position compared to our competitors.</p>
<h2>2. What are the most important and emerging skills to work in the new normal?</h2>
<p>I would say that the most important thing is to have a positive attitude to change and take initiative at all levels. These skills are basically akin to agile ways of working, dealing with constant change as a normality and having the right processes to thrive financially in that environment. In order to achieve this, the most successful companies have switched from a hierarchical management culture to an empowered autonomous one with leadership at all levels. Concretely, this means getting managers to lead and support their colleagues rather than micromanage them, and involve the managers more in doing some of the client work &ndash; this also means organisation can react better to workload spikes.</p>
<h2>3. What changes have you made in operations and hiring that are here to stay, and what will you lose?</h2>
<p>The main change was to have more openness and clarity on how the business is run on a daily basis, and give everyone access to some financial numbers. This was so that they all knew how we are doing and why we are making certain decisions.</p>
<p>In terms of hiring, the process is not that different as video calls and interviews are ubiquitous, but I must admit it is not easy for new starters to get inducted and get to know people quickly. In order to help them and the other members of staff to get a sense of community, we organise &lsquo;virtual desks&rsquo; chatrooms (which mimic office desks with colleagues) and regular virtual company meets so social interactions can still happen, albeit online.</p>
<h2>4. What has been your biggest key learning and how will this prepare you for the future?</h2>
<p>Our perceived constraints are only what we make of them, for example: we can&rsquo;t all work from home, we can&rsquo;t trust people to do the right thing, we can&rsquo;t adopt a new technology rapidly, we can&rsquo;t change that fast and so on.</p>
<p>As Henry Ford used to say &ldquo;Whether you think you can, or you think you can&rsquo;t, you&rsquo;re right&rdquo;</p>
<p>Akin to agile principles, the key learning for me is that organisations must transform to adapt to change and not just to weather the current situation. Companies must embrace business agility and set-up for continuous change so they can constantly adapt to a rapidly changing world.</p>
<p>People and organisations can change and adapt pretty quickly, as long as they know why, and they have visibility and rationale for the decision making. This requires strong leadership and a shift from &lsquo;command and control&rsquo; to &lsquo;autonomy and purpose&rsquo;, it means changing processes, governance, incentivisation and shifting the focus of many roles and supporting them transition without fear.</p>
<h2>5. What has been the biggest surprise to you?</h2>
<p>The speed at which most organisations have taken to remote working and moved their business online when it seemed almost impossible, or a very lengthy process, for most of them before COVID. It really shows that nothing prepares people as much as contact with the enemy, and when radical change happens, most of us can adapt very rapidly.</p>

Futureheads Five Stories – Guillaume Buat-Ménard

<p>It has been a year quite unlike any other. There are some things which, for better or worse, have become synonymous with 2020 &ndash; banana bread and sourdough, the Zoom pub quiz, home-schooling. Against a backdrop of Covid, there have been cultural and social phenomena which have grabbed the nation&rsquo;s attention &ndash; Black Lives Matter, the Greta effect and Marcus Rashford, among others.</p>
<p>But we&rsquo;re not here to talk about the obvious. Instead, we&rsquo;ve delved deeper into 2020 to uncover a few of the lesser known trends that may have simply passed you by.</p>

<h2>Going NOLO</h2>
<p>Surprisingly,&nbsp;<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">sales of low and no-alcohol (NOLO) drinks</span>&nbsp;<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">soared 30% in the UK during lockdown.</span>&nbsp;Waitrose, for example, saw a 54% increase in low and no-alcohol ale compared to the same time last year as many consumers now choose to go dry. UK drinking habits, particularly among the younger generations, have been edging towards a hangover-free future over the last couple of years and, despite what you may think, it appears that the stresses of lockdown and homeschooling actually didn&rsquo;t end up driving everyone to drink.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>The rise of the newsletter</h2>
<p>Already starting to edge their way into the mainstream last year, the rise of email newsletters in 2020 has been supersonic. They&rsquo;ve become the go-to channel for brands and individual writers alike, thanks largely to the growth in popular platforms such as Substack and Mailchimp. In our opinion,&nbsp;<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">newsletters offer a welcome return to a direct relationship between publisher and reader</span>, driven by good old-fashioned content and entirely unaffected by the increasingly frustrating algorithms of Facebook et al. Long may they continue.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Reaching for the past</h2>
<p>Speaking of old-fashioned, in times of crisis, it&rsquo;s a well known fact that we tend to turn to nostalgia to give us that warm comforting hug of familiarity and feeling of security. During the first lockdown,&nbsp;<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">Spotify reported a 54% increase in searches for &lsquo;oldies&rsquo; or &lsquo;throwback&rsquo; with a surge in nostalgic playlists.</span>&nbsp;And it&rsquo;s not just music that we&rsquo;ve been using as a comfort blanket; UK consumers have been revisiting dishes from their childhood too. According to Co-op, sales of packet trifle have increased this year by a staggering 738%&hellip;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Elasticated waistbands</h2>
<p>Given all that nostalgic eating, the Telegraph&rsquo;s report that&nbsp;<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">sales of trousers with elasticated waistbands rose by 16% this year</span>&nbsp;should come as no surprise. With most of us working from home, work smart has gone out the window and the elasticated waistband combines comfort (without going quite as far as all-day pajamas) with some level of respectability. Who would have thought that the mainstay of 1930s fashion would make such a comeback?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Surge in adult e-learning</h2>
<p>Whether down to furlough, redundancy or simply the absence of the daily grinding commute, we&rsquo;ve all found ourselves with a bit of unexpected extra time this year. Some have used it to grow their side-hustle&nbsp;<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 25);">(1 in 5 of us have one apparently)</span>, others have spent hours learning entirely new skills. Enrolments on online courses have surged this year as we look to alleviate lockdown boredom or change our career path entirely, and digital is the hot ticket. The UK&rsquo;s Institute of Coding, for instance, saw an enormous jump in learners on their digital skills courses from 32,000 in January to more than 400,000 by June.</p>

Lesser Known Trends of 2020

<p>When you are starting out it can be hard to navigate the office landscape, so here are a few tips that have served me well over the years.</p>

<p>Having worked in the recruitment industry for over 20 years, I have seen some examples of good behaviour, and some examples of not so good behaviour that has impacted someone's career. When you are starting out it can be hard to navigate the office landscape, so here are a few tips that have served me well over the years:&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do dress appropriately</strong>. It's important to make a good first impression, this may mean a suit but also may mean smart casual depending on your industry and company. If you are unsure, always err on the side of caution and go smarter!&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do be on time</strong>. Employers want people that are well prepped and ready to go from your start time, not just falling in the door. This also applies for meetings, both internal and external &ndash; create the right impression from the start.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do be respectful of others</strong>. You need to be polite, courteous and don&rsquo;t fall into the trap of engaging in gossip or negative talk in the office.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>Do communicate effectively</strong>. Make sure you are clear and concise in your written and verbal communications, and actively listening when others are speaking.&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Do work collaboratively</strong>. Office work often involves teamwork, and it's important to be able to work well with others.&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Don&rsquo;t be needlessly noisy</strong>. This includes speaking loudly on the phone, playing music without headphones, and generally making excessive noise that might distract others.</li>

<li><strong>Don't be a clock-watcher</strong>. Constantly checking the time or counting down the minutes until the end of the workday will not give the impression that you're fully committed to your job.&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Don't be negative</strong>. Complaining or being negative can bring down the morale of the office, and it's important to maintain a positive attitude.&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Don&rsquo;t neglect your company kit</strong>. This includes office equipment, supplies, and facilities. For example, if you are going out after work then you need to leave your laptop in a locker in the office.&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Don&rsquo;t maintain a messy desk policy</strong> &ndash; think of the environment and don&rsquo;t print unless you need to. Also, a clear and organised desk is a good insight into your personal mind. Too much clutter can get in the way and even be a distraction.&nbsp;</li>

<p>It's important to remember that office culture can vary from company to company, so always be mindful of the specific norms and expectations of the office you're working in.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It's also worth mentioning that office culture includes some unspoken rules and values, for instance 'response time' for email, meeting culture, and who is allowed to access certain information. It's important to learn and understand these things within your first week or so, so don't be afraid of asking questions or clarify.&nbsp;</p>
