Overall,&nbsp; it's an essential piece of your job searching toolkit to make a positive impact and stand out from the competition, ultimately increasing your chances of landing your desired job. Here are the top 10 tips for digital and tech professionals to create an effective CV:&nbsp;</p>
<h3>&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>1. Tailor your CV to the tech or digital role you are applying for&nbsp;</h3>
<p>This means highlighting the skills and experience that are most relevant to the job. Keep it concise and clearly show the impact you have had in previous roles.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>2. Summarise your skill set in the opening paragraph &nbsp;</h3>
<p>This is a great way to grab the recruiter's attention and give them a quick overview of your experience. This is a chance to give them a taste of who you are! Ask someone who knows you to take a look and make sure your values and character are coming through &ndash; they are just as important for potential employers as your skills! Keep it authentic!</p>

<p>You may want to add a few bullet points at the top of your CV listing your most impressive or relevant experience for the roles you are applying for. Then make sure you discuss your most recent work experience with clear dates. If there are any significant gaps on your CV, include reasons why (if this is something you&rsquo;d rather discuss in person, putting &lsquo;career break&rsquo; is also fine).</p>

<p>Ensure it makes every point necessary without waffling Keep things short and sweet, and avoid using jargon or technical terms that the recruiter may not understand. However, don&rsquo;t get bogged down in keeping your CV to one page, especially if you have many years of experience! It&rsquo;s better to include a relevant contribution you made, than have a one-page CV with a lack of detail.</p>

Shining a Light on You: How to Write a Good CV

<h3>The topic of portfolio Design is a common and opinionated one. &nbsp;It&rsquo;s a conversation I have with a lot of Designers &amp; hiring managers, and those conversations bring up recurrent themes beyond what I would describe as base-level expectations &ndash; i.e., the useful stuff that we find hiring managers often look for and value through the hiring process. &nbsp;</h3>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Thoughts on Formatting &nbsp;</h3>
<p>Website vs. PDF is the most common question here.&nbsp;</p>
<p>PDFs work well for isolated case studies and more sensitive work (though always make sure to respect and adhere to NDAs/Confidentiality agreements). &nbsp;</p>
<p>In most cases I prefer a website, or a portfolio that surfaces recent work first but allows freedom to the user in navigating it &ndash; as case studies have evolved to become longer, it can be very frustrating to scroll through 30-40 pages to find what you&rsquo;re looking for in a single PDF document. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Lastly, with websites, label your projects before a user clicks on them &ndash; is this a Design system or Native mobile project? This allows users to find the most relevant work to the role they are considering you for first. &nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Case Study Length&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Context and first impressions are both hugely important and in my experience, it&rsquo;s unusual for a recruiter or hiring manager to spend more than 5 minutes reading or looking through a case study at the review stage &ndash; However, the ideal portfolio contains thorough case studies that are long enough. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Context is hugely important, and in my experience, it&rsquo;s really rare for a hiring manager or recruiter to spend more than 5 minutes reading or looking through a case study, which highlights the importance of surfacing information efficiently and relatively quickly &ndash; this is a balance. We&rsquo;ll share more on what needs to be surfaced later in the article. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Process 🤝🏻 Outcomes &nbsp;</h3>
<p>With Design long having become more and more central to a business&rsquo;s overall success, as well as businesses seeking to understand and measure the value of Design within their organisation, it&rsquo;s no surprise that hirers look to understand both the impact of a piece of Design work, but also the journey on the way to create that impact. &nbsp;</p>
<p>I don&rsquo;t think *every* piece in a portfolio needs to zone in heavily on business outcomes, but as a Product Designer being able to do this will be a key expectation and needs to be shown throughout most of your projects. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Due to the intrinsic nature of Design, it can be really challenging to attribute business outcomes *directly* to design, and I&rsquo;d encourage designers not to stretch too hard to do this. Business outcomes are the collective effort of a product team/squad comprised of individuals (Product, Design, Eng, Research etc) contributing to the whole, and it&rsquo;s those outcomes that I value in portfolios. &nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h4>Here are the top 4 things I would always consider showing: &nbsp;</h4>
<p><strong>Context </strong>&ndash; How did this project come to exist? Where was it initiated? The why. &nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Objectives </strong>&ndash; What were the key success measures &amp; goals for this project? &nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Process </strong>&ndash; Discovery/Research, UX Design, Visual Design, Prototypes.&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Outcomes </strong>&ndash; Connect back to Context/Objectives, did this project succeed? &nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Contextual Approach to Design&nbsp;</h3>
<p>This started as a bit of a personal bug-bear, but it&rsquo;s something that has resonated with a lot of Design-Leaders I have spoken with, so I&rsquo;d say it carries some validity. &nbsp;</p>
<p>I would avoid two things: &nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Having a page titled &lsquo;my process&rsquo; that outlines your approach to all Design projects.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Showing case studies with identical processes and structures. &nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;Design is all about problem-solving, and adaptability to find effective outcomes in different sectors, business types and circumstances &ndash; and Designers that can do that well are the ones that I have seen be most desirable by organisations. &nbsp;</p>
<p>All it comes back to is explaining why something did/did not happen &ndash; for example, life at a start-up can be scrappy, and there&rsquo;s not always time or budget to do months of User Research/Discovery work, necessitating moving into design more quickly&hellip; &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h4>Tackling Complexity (Environments and Problems)&nbsp;</h4>
<p>You will commonly hear job descriptions or adverts refer to a need to solve complex problems or have worked in challenging environments/situations &ndash; in fact, this is now very common, and something that should be communicated in a portfolio. &nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Complexity&rdquo; can often be interpreted as having needed to work on B2B products with a heavy data/visualisation element, but that is not often or always the case. &nbsp;</p>
<p>When it comes to complex problems, this is about being able to frame the complexity of the problems you have worked on, in turn telling a compelling story that outlines/explains the products complexity, but also your ability to grasp complex challenges and solve them with effective Design solutions. &nbsp;</p>
<p>With complex environments, there is a reality that working with a challenging stakeholder, PM, or Engineer may make up part of your remit, and being open around how you have worked in challenging/complex environments can be framed positively in your portfolio and as part of your case studies. For example, one common challenge is Design operating in environments that aren&rsquo;t &lsquo;design-led&rsquo;, or who haven&rsquo;t typically placed much value on design &ndash; sharing these challenges often resonates with hiring teams. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Final Visual checklist&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Images/visuals crisp and polished (not pixelated) - ✔️ &nbsp;</p>
<p>Works well on all devices - ✔️ &nbsp;</p>
<p>Obvious typos (i.e., in headings) - ✔️ &nbsp;</p>
<p>Runs smoothly (e.g., page loads etc) - ✔️&nbsp;</p>

<h3>Attention-Grabbing LinkedIn Headline&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Your headline is the first thing people see when they visit your profile, so make it count. Instead of simply listing your job title, consider using this space to highlight your expertise, achievements, or unique value proposition. Tailor your headline to attract the attention of your target audience and make them want to learn more about you.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Optimise Your Profile Picture and Background Image&nbsp;</h3>
<p>First things first, make sure you have one! Statistics show that LinkedIn members with a photo receive far more engagement: 21 times more profile views and 9 times more connection requests. Choose a good representative profile picture that authentically portrays you. Select a background image that aligns with your professional goals or showcases your industry. Avoid generic or irrelevant images and opt for something that visually represents your personal brand. The main thing is &ndash; to have a profile picture that best represents you. Lack of profile pictures means you&rsquo;re not seen... and therefore won&rsquo;t be heard.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Create an Engaging Summary&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Your LinkedIn summary should be a compelling narrative that captures your professional journey, highlights your accomplishments, and showcases your skills. Use this section to tell your story, demonstrate your expertise, and emphasise what sets you apart from others in your field. Incorporate relevant keywords to enhance your profile's visibility in search results. First impressions count, so don't be afraid to show some personality!</p>
<h3>Showcase Your Experience&nbsp;</h3>
<p>List your work experience in reverse chronological order, providing detailed descriptions of your roles and responsibilities. Don't just focus on job titles and dates; highlight your achievements, measurable results, and contributions. Use bullet points to make your experience section more readable and impactful depending on the industry you're looking to enter. Detail of your wins is a must here!</p>
<h3>Leverage Recommendations and Endorsements&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Want to highlight what you're truly valued for? Endorsements are great, but recommendations take it to the next level. They're personal testimonials that showcase your work experience. We've made it super easy for you to request recommendations from specific contacts. Just head over to the Recommendations section on your profile, think about who you'd love a recommendation from, and personalize your request. It's a little extra effort that goes a long way!</p>
<h3>Highlight Your Skills and Expertise&nbsp;</h3>
<p>LinkedIn offers a dedicated section to showcase your skills. Select skills that are relevant to your profession and reflect your expertise. Request endorsements from connections who can vouch for your abilities. The more endorsements you have, the more likely you are to appear in search results when recruiters or potential clients are seeking professionals with your skill set. Go on &ndash; it's good to brag a little &ndash; be proud of your achievements!&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Join In and Engage</h3>
<p>LinkedIn groups are excellent resources for networking, industry insights, and professional discussions. Join groups that align with your interests, industry, or career goals. Actively engage with other members by sharing insights, participating in discussions, and offering valuable advice. This will help you establish yourself as a thought leader and expand your network.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Publish Engaging Content&nbsp;</h3>
<p>LinkedIn's publishing platform allows you to share articles, insights, and industry trends with your connections and beyond. Publishing valuable content establishes your authority and increases your visibility within your network. Regularly contribute articles or posts that provide meaningful insights and add value to your connections.</p>
<h3>Be Active</h3>
<p>Having a network of connections is fantastic, but being an active participant in that network is even better. By sharing relevant content with your network, you add value to their LinkedIn feeds and establish yourself as a valuable resource. Start by keeping an eye on your LinkedIn feed and sharing content that genuinely interests you. It's a great way to showcase your point of view and spark meaningful conversations. Your network wants to get to know you. Through your interests, opinions and insights. Engage, comment, and share news and posts you find interesting and your network will naturally evolve into one that helps you learn, discuss and be involved with the development of your sector.</p>
<h3>Be Involved in the Conversation</h3>
<p>Sharing content is just the beginning. When you leave comments on shared posts, you increase your visibility in the feed and start expressing why a particular piece of content matters to you. Thoughtfully crafted comments also allow you to share a wider range of content, even if you don't fully agree with it. Toby Thwaites

<p>Toby joined Futureheads in 2011 as a Resourcer and one of the business's original recruits.</p>
<p>He now oversees all sales initiatives across the Futureheads business. Toby leads the Senior Sales management team in order to deliver an efficient, first-class experience to our clients and candidates.</p>
<p>When not at work, Toby loves countryside living with his partner and Labrador (Olive), good food, nurturing his garden, and going on new adventures.&nbsp;</p>

Maria Jones

<p>Maria manages the Contract Team at Futureheads.</p>
<p>Maria has worked in recruitment for around 10 years, and the majority of this has been within the Design &amp; creative sector.</p>
<p>When it comes to management, Maria focuses on each consultant's individual style of working and adapts her approach to how best she can support that. She believes in creating a team environment where consultants are set up and given the tools to be the best version of themselves every day.</p>
<p>Outside of work, Maria enjoys spending time with her family. She recently had a baby girl called Nancy, who keeps her busy. And when she and her friends can finally get a girls' day out in the diary, you will usually find them at some sort of bottomless brunch in London!&nbsp;</p>

Joseph Cardone

<p>Joseph is a UI and Product Design Senior Consultant for Futureheads.</p>
<p>He has a background in Sales and previously worked for companies such as Tesla and JIVR.&nbsp;As part of the Design Team at Futureheads Joseph works across a broad range of clients from small start-ups, consultancies/agencies and big brands. His main focus is working with permanent UI &amp; Product Designers.</p>
<p>Outside of work, Joseph is a DJ and Music Producer. He's been doing that for over 15 years. He's also a salsa dancer and loves to cook Italian food.&nbsp;</p>

Kevel Rathod
