Product Designer

<p>Whether you're being hired for a Contract Product Design role or your next Permanent Product Design position, the real&nbsp;test for suitability comes in meeting the designer behind the work, and in our experience, a lack of preparation and awareness for what the interview will entail are key reasons designers stumble.</p>

<p>Interviewing for design jobs in London is highly competitive. Sure, a portfolio is a foot through the door, and may even wedge the door open&hellip;but none of our clients would hire someone solely on the merits of them being a good designer &ndash; no matter how good they are.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The real test for suitability comes in meeting the designer behind the work, and in our experience, a lack of preparation and awareness for what the interview will entail are key reasons designers stumble.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In my experience, the following pointers are worth discussing and while some may seem obvious, the guide below offers a great refresher for anyone seeking a job in design.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><strong>1. Make sure you are genuinely committed and interested in the job</strong>&nbsp;</h2>
<p>I did warn you that this might feel obvious, but it&rsquo;s a point well worth getting out in the open.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Whilst you should always feel genuinely committed and interested in a job before submitting an application, things change and if, before an interview, you know in your heart of hearts that you&rsquo;re no longer interested in the position and nothing can change your mind, then you are best off withdrawing from the process.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Should you decide to withdraw, provide ample notice (not one hour before the interview) and always call your interviewer or recruiter to talk through your decision, rather than firing off an email.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><strong>2. Get a steer on the structure of the interview from your recruiter</strong>&nbsp;</h2>
<p>Too many candidates are given a rather informal, &lsquo;OK, you&rsquo;ve got an hour booked in at 5.30. Off you go, let us know how it goes,&rsquo; kind of send-off.&nbsp;</p>
<p>We like to give as much detail as we can about:&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Who you are meeting;&nbsp;</li>
<li>Who you should ask for when you get there;&nbsp;</li>
<li>What you should bring with you;&nbsp;</li>
<li>What you should prepare to talk about beforehand;&nbsp;</li>
<li>What is likely to happen in the interview.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<p>Most first stage design interviews follow a typical structure, with a significant element focusing portfolio review where you will be asked to walk through your key projects, which leads us to&hellip;.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><strong>3. Always prepare beforehand what projects you&rsquo;re going to present</strong>&nbsp;</h2>
<p>In addition to creative talent, designers need above average communication skills; they need to be able to understand the needs of a client and effectively communicate their ideas and vision verbally, visually, and in writing.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The portfolio and the portfolio review are great opportunities to showcase your range of communication skills, so bear in mind the following points:&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Don&rsquo;t let your interview be the first time you&rsquo;re talking about your work! You wouldn&rsquo;t deliver a presentation without prior preparation/run throughs, so be sure to get some practice in beforehand.&nbsp;</li>
<li>When talking through your work, choose projects that are relevant to the job or project you are interviewing for, and remember that a project could be relevant for several reasons (sector, processes, platform type).&nbsp;</li>
<li>Don&rsquo;t try to talk through everything in your portfolio. There is more value to be thorough on two or three projects than to skim the surface of 10.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Make sure you can talk through the process. 99% of our clients want to hear the details and thought process behind your work. It&rsquo;s a very different thing to say, &ldquo;Here&rsquo;s a website I designed&hellip;ta-dah!&rdquo; than, &ldquo;Here&rsquo;s a website I designed. The brief was X, the problem the client needed solving was Y, and these were the different steps I took to get to the end result.&rdquo;&nbsp;</li>
<li>&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<h2><strong>4. Do your research</strong>&nbsp;</h2>
<p>Few things are more frustrating as an interviewer than a candidate who turns up for an interview and comes across as not knowing why and what they&rsquo;re there for, or who hasn&rsquo;t researched the company.&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Really read up on the company before an interview. Read articles and news stories about them, and get a feel for their brand and tone by spending time on their website.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Note any of their design work you like (and dislike). Identify any work that resonates with you, or that you&rsquo;re particularly curious about as points of interest to discuss during your interview. It shows you are genuinely interested in them.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Finally, some quick wins&hellip;</strong>&nbsp;</h3>
<p><em>Take your laptop to showcase your work:</em> How is the interviewer going to make notes if they&rsquo;re looking at your work on their screen? Also, they might not invert their scroll like you do. Nightmare.&nbsp;</p>
<p><em>Organise your work:</em> No rifling through sub-folders for a specific file. Have your work neatly organised into PDF case studies OR all on your website to ensure a smooth presentation.&nbsp;</p>
<p><em>Be constructive, not negative:</em> Don&rsquo;t put down the company/people you are currently working with.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>And finally&hellip;.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Remember that this is definitely NOT just a chat, it is an interview. Design is a casual industry, but it&rsquo;s important to be casual whilst also being professional and prepared!&nbsp;</p>

Stress Awareness Month is an opportunity to learn more about stress, identify its effects, and take steps to manage it effectively.</p>

<h2><strong>The Importance of Stress Awareness Month&nbsp;</strong></h2>
<p>In today's fast-paced world, stress has become an ever-present part of our lives. Work, relationships, financial worries, and health concerns are just a few examples of the things that can cause stress. While some stress is necessary for survival and can even be beneficial, chronic stress can lead to a variety of health problems, including anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, heart disease, and more.&nbsp;</p>

Identifying and Managing Stress 

<p>Heta has joined Futureheads as a Consultant, bringing her expertise across all Tech and Engineering skill sets, with a background in Infrastructure, Cloud, and Networks. She is passionate about working holistically with both candidates and clients, focusing on building long-term relationships and delivering exceptional service&mdash;values that are deeply rooted in the culture at Futureheads.</p>
<p>Outside of her role in connecting people within the Tech industry, Heta pursues her other passions: teaching yoga and studying to become an Ayurvedic practitioner. She has a real love for travel, enjoying learning new languages, exploring different cultures, and trying new foods. Some of her travel highlights include trekking in Nepal, exploring Kenya, and discovering the wonders of Japan.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to get into recruitment?</h3>
<p>I&rsquo;m an ex-accountant turned tech recruiter that teaches yoga and a trainee Ayurvedic practitioner. If it wasn&rsquo;t for lockdown I wouldn&rsquo;t have made the transition so early on, but I realised I wanted to make a difference and align my skills to something I was more suited to. Once I got into recruitment, I just knew I wouldn&rsquo;t ever go back to accounting, and it was the right call I made.</p>
<h3>What motivated you to join Futureheads?</h3>
<p>I was taking my search and next steps seriously when I was looking for a second recruitment role, I wanted somewhere where I could belong and make a real difference. My values are a key part of who I am and when I found out that Futureheads had the same viewpoint, I knew this was it. I saw the things they had done to make an impact socially and the B corp aspect really shows this.</p>
<h3>What has your first 2 months been like?</h3>
<p>The first two months have been enjoyable, it&rsquo;s been invigorating and have learnt a lot which has really changed my lens on the way I see things. I can be myself and have been accepted so easily, it&rsquo;s refreshing and makes me want to do better.</p>
<h3>What are you looking forward to next?</h3>
<p>I&rsquo;m looking forward to reaching my goals, one of which I&rsquo;m keen on is to expand the DevOps, Cloud and Infrastructure desk as I specialise in this area. To also better myself and bringing more to the table with ideas I have been given the freedom to expand on, so watch this space!</p>

Chris Chapman

<p class="MsoNormal">As Co-MD, Chris is responsible for leading the Futureheads and SyncD businesses alongside Rohan.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Chris has been an integral part of the Futureheads team for almost a decade, spending time within and growing both Futureheads and SyncD. Having run embedded projects with clients spanning digital media, technical consultancy and med-tech, he's not only a digital hiring expert, but genuinely understands how Futureheads' clients work. Passionate about growing an industry-aligned business, Chris has spoken at several universities, and co-organises and attends industry events.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">When he&rsquo;s not living and breathing all things digital, he can be found spending time with family, attending live music events, playing football and searching for golf balls in the long grass.</p>

Jamie Perlmutter

<p>Jamie has worked in the tech/digital sector for over a decade and since joining Futureheads in 2016, he&rsquo;s helped a number of leading businesses to scale and achieve their strategic and commercial goals.<br>&nbsp;<br>His recruitment mantra (inspired by a poster in one of our meeting rooms) is to work hard and be nice to people. In practice, this means Jamie strives to go the extra mile, providing clear channels of communication and leveraging his problem-solving skills to create positive experiences for candidates and clients alike.<br>&nbsp;<br>Jamie&rsquo;s a hands-on recruiter and people manager whose experience includes both embedded and 360 contingency recruitment, spanning all talent disciplines across the product development lifecycle. However, his sweet spot is Product Design, UX, Service Design and User Research.<br>&nbsp;<br>Outside of work, when Jamie&rsquo;s not busy being a dad to his young son, you&rsquo;ll either find him at gigs, eating fancy burgers or complaining from the North Bank at the Emirates Stadium.&nbsp;</p>

Joseph Cardone

<p>Joseph is a UI and Product Design Senior Consultant for Futureheads.</p>
<p>He has a background in Sales and previously worked for companies such as Tesla and JIVR.&nbsp;As part of the Design Team at Futureheads Joseph works across a broad range of clients from small start-ups, consultancies/agencies and big brands. His main focus is working with permanent UI &amp; Product Designers.</p>
<p>Outside of work, Joseph is a DJ and Music Producer. He's been doing that for over 15 years. He's also a salsa dancer and loves to cook Italian food.&nbsp;</p>

Kevel Rathod
