I am working with a tech consultancy who provide cutting edge technology and bespoke software solutions to blue chip clients. They are growing and looking for smart UX Designers who would relish getting stuck in to complex problems. Whether you are a mid-weight, a senior or a Lead – if you enjoy working on complex problems and can work end-to-end to high standards, then they will have a home for you.

Their clients tend to be longstanding clients that they’ve worked with extensively and they serve as a premium consultancy. Those clients will tend to be FS clients; investment banks, retails banks, asset management firms and software utilised in trading. They are also moving into the energy sector, insurance and the public sector too.

The challenge at the consultancy is that they provide very complex systems. They are looking for someone who would enjoy taking complex streams of data and creating a product that could take that data and transform it into a digestible and intelligible format on a dashboard. You will be working on tools and software around productivity, creating internal tools, working across B2B, B2C applications and complex trading systems where seconds in decision making counts for a lot.

The way they are set up to do that is they work in cross functional teams in an Agile environment of one or two UX Designers, a PM, a few developers, some testers and then make it happen! Their Head of UX has been there for a long time, is incredibly nice, funny, engaging and is active in the industry talking at event and conferences and oversees a team of around 12 designers.

What they are looking for in a UX Designer, and they do have high standards, is someone who can work truly end to end. Being able to conduct research is very important as is doing so in varied ways – they work in a sector where it is often design that promotes questions so knowing how to stimulate your user base to get answers is important. When it comes to feeding those insights into products and design, having that analytical mind to work with these complex products is essential. They also are looking for designers with crisp design skills. They aren’t looking for pixel perfect designs and your job is not to create branding guides and library patterns as you aren’t a UI Designer, however they have high standards and in their industry, prototypes need to be done to a high fidelity. They are looking for the end to end whole package.

Where I think this opportunity gets really interesting on top of the complexity of the challenge is the chance to have an influence over where the UX function will be a couple years from now. The consultancy are very much in the space where you need to look at the holistic world around their products and services and Service Design is a space their Head of UX is keen to continue exploring and further the service that they are providing to their clients. The area of FS and insurance is ripe for innovation, so it’s at an interesting time and someone who wants to have influence on that direction is definitely something they are looking for.

The key requirements for a mid/Senior/Lead UX Designer are:

  • A strong end to end toolkit

  • A desire to work on complex problems and solutions

  • Good formative and evaluative research experience

  • Evidence of crisp interaction design skills
