I’m working with an eCommerce business who are a household name in novelty gifts and greetings cards. They have been instrumental in establishing the online personalised gifts market and continue to remain the market leaders. This year they aim to introduce new product lines and experiment with fresh design concepts. They’re a progressive business who have a real need to remain at the pinnacle of their industry.

Teams are organised into agile squads and include a Scrum Master, product owners, tech (FEDs/BEDs/Full-Stack) UX Designers and UI Designers. Depending on the programme schedule, there are between 5-8 teams at any one time sitting across checkout basket, product customisation and storefront – with a further squad sitting holistically across them all. Teams are rotated to ensure that every gets a good level of variety in their work.

They’re now looking to add a User Research function to sit across all of these teams and the entire business. This person will report into the Head of UX (who themselves has a solid grounding in user research – so you won’t be alone). In addition to this lead level hire, they’re also looking for a mid-weight researcher to balance the load. Therefore the leading and mentoring of this person will be the responsibility of the lead (in collaboration with the Head of UX). As you can imagine, this also means you’ll have the opportunity to define the process that research will follow.

They're actioning several ideas that they'd like the research function to contribute towards. What’s perhaps most exciting about this position is the scope of the research you’ll be tasked with delivering. Rather than a pure focus on usability (which they see as a bit of a given at this level) you should be eager to answer broader questions including:

  • “How can we further explore/enable the emotional component of the checkout and delivery process?”
  • “How do you research disruption?”
  • “Why do people still buy print in favour of other gifts?”


Key Requirements

  • Experience leading programmes of research and putting processes into place
  • Experience leading/guiding (and preferably mentoring) user researchers
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities (this role will present insights to C-level execs)
  • A passion for answering wider research questions
  • Previous experience in eCommerce is ideal, but not a requisite
  • Further, as this is an international group, being bi-lingual (particularly French/Spanish/German) would be a bonus!
