I’m working with a well-known high street retail and eCommerce organisation. They’ve recently hired a new Head of UX who has big plans for the UX team and how the wider digital department can have a massive impact on the overall business. The team was initially set up in a hybrid formation, though are now switching to a more specialism focussed area to instigate a better focus on user centred design.

Project requirements come from multiple areas within the business, which means there is a lot of variety. There are 6 product owners, who are responsible for writing specs, user stories and generally defining the requirements. These likely to be somewhat top level, which allows you the freedom to devise fresh new solutions.

They’ve already defined a schedule of work, with projects including a re-platforming piece, a modular website redesign and an overhaul of their native app (both iOS and Android). Most excitingly, they’re also looking towards new experiential properties which can be implemented into their instore experience. As yet, this work is somewhat undefined, which presents the opportunity for a UX practitioner to get involved from the earliest ideation stages.

When all hires are made, the team will be 5 strong, including the Head of UX, 2 UI designers and these 2 UX Architects. This will be a flat structure; therefore, you’ll benefit from being surrounded by practitioners of equal experience. In time, there is scope for this team to build out further, including plans to hire a dedicated user research function.

As mentioned in the header, they’re looking to hire 2 UX Architects who are passionate about driving change within an established organisation. You’ll be expected to immerse yourself into the wider business, championing UX best practices throughout.

The first thing you’d be focussed on would be creating a bedrock of solid UX processes, tools and techniques thus allowing a consistent and scalable process to future projects. With this you get to have an immediate impact on the teams approach to projects.

Key Criteria

  • A portfolio of projects detailing good end-to-end processes and thinking
  • A strong understanding of user centred design principles across responsive web and native app technologies
  • Comfortable balancing business objectives with the needs of the user
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • eCommerce experience is desirable, but not a requisite.
